That phrase is what first peaked my interest in considering journalism as a career. It landed me a reporter job on a college newspaper before I graduated high school. It sparked ideas for stories that made me jump out of airplanes and sleep in odd places. It led to student media promotions and internships, including the prestigious American Society of Magazine Editors internship in the summer of 2015. It taught me that good can come out of even the most terrible losses. Most recently, it moved me out of my home in Milwaukee when I found full-time employment as a journalist in New York City. I don't know what I'll write next. That particular spark of literary inspiration could show up in an overheard conversation or a breathtaking scenic view, suddenly jabbing at my brain until I set it in the correct typeface. Or in an email from my editor asking for TK story told in TK words. But I will write. Because everyone has a lesson to teach and a story to tell. Because everyone has a purpose. And this is mine. Why did I write? Because I found life unsatisfactory |
